Dungog Historical Society Inc

The Dungog Historical Society operates the Dungog Museum and our purpose is collecting, preserving and interpreting local heritage for everyone.

Our objects are to
(a)    Operate and manage the Museum
(b)    Promote the collection, preservation, exhibition and interpretation of historical items of local significance, so that they are available to members of the public
(c)    Promote local history, including family history and the Museum’s collection
(d)    Fundraise for the above purposes

Brief history, special past projects or events:
The Society was formed in 1963 and in 1968 opened the Dungog Museum in the former School of Arts building. The Society has a wide collection of items that showcase Dungog’s history, heritage and culture.

There are two core displays. The first one is about the local Aboriginals, exploration and early Dungog.  The Second one is Dungog: The Making of a Community.  It is based upon different themes, including entertainment and sport, the contribution of women to the community, the impact of the two world wars, health and education, disasters and employment.

One room is used for changing exhibitions.  Our current exhibition is called ‘Gallipoli and Beersheba: The Dungog Connections’.  A new exhibition about the men of Dungog and the western front is being developed.

In November 2008 we launched heritage signs for buildings in the main street and in 2011 coordinated the celebrations for the Centenary of Rail to Dungog
