Merriwa Railway Society Inc

The rail line from Muswellbrook to Merriwa was opened on the 29th. October 1917. It had taken over 5 years for the line to be built from Merriwa to Sandy Hollow. Up to 33 trips per week operated at the peak, moving passengers and freight from the farms and to the retail shops. The last passenger train ran in 1973 and the last freight train 1988. The Merriwa Railway Society Inc was formed in 2009 to restore the disused railway site at Merriwa. The organisation plans to establish a "Rail Museum" in the Station and Goods Shed rooms, which will house static and rolling rail stock exhibitions. It is hoped the museum will become a tourist attraction and provide an economic benefit for Merriwa and Districts.
