A 'conversation' with the artist is being organised as part of a development program by the Murrurundi Museum for local artists and art collectors.

Set down for Wednesday evening (21/2/2018) at 6:00pm, the discussion will centre on Richard Hook and Leonie Watson's interpretation of figure-ground relations of modern painting and abstraction.

The painting and topographies have been on loan to the Murrurundi and District Historical Society Inc. by the two artists and have been on show in "God's Waiting Room" exhibition church hall in the main street of Murrurundi.

They are due to return to their Wollongong University owners at the end of the month.

"We have been thinking of having 'Conversations' between the public and artists for some time now and these interpretive works afford us the opportunity to expand the viwers' scope," Murrurundi Museum president Des Dugan said.
"The works make use of the human figure. Its rationale is two-fold: to contrast some dramatically different approaches to working with the body in painting and to show how these varied representations also embody very different approaches to the medium and its history," local artist Jelle van den Berg commented.

Richard Hooks contends the body is celebrated for its inherent mobility and its potential to generate new structures for paintings.

"However, the figures are not merely arbitrary compositional devices. Each body takes up a position that is always part of some action, moving or still."

For Leonie Watson, draperies come to stand in for the body by visual analogy: the skin's surface is evoked by creases, folds, bulges and invaginations that suggest the body's hidden topographies.

Leonie has furnished a graphic description of her work to accompany the 'Conversation.'
