Julie Fitzgerald
Julie Fitzgerald is a multiskilled artist whose colourful sensory works in fibres can be touched. Vision Australia clients, her art audience and traditional followers of handicrafts have been intrigued at how she pushes boundaries to create art.
“It’s a bit of fun” says Julie, “I love to see people smile. Becoming a member of Dungog By Design changed my life by giving me the encouragement and confidence to create my own style.”
“Pathology Cultures” reflects the colourful microscopic growths developed on Petri dishes. One needs to imagine that these organisms are growing. They are memories of my early years working for Dr Peter Hendry as an office girl. I spent my free time learning in the laboratories which were then the rooms of two adjoining suburban houses in Parkway Avenue, Hamilton.
The method is freeform crochet and wire entwined to give a 3D effect. The yarn is from the stash in my studio and the bases are table mats found at the Anglican Church Op Shop in Dungog.
Perfect for a laboratory or wall art series each $60
Gaye Shield
Painting is my passion and has been for as long as I can remember. I care deeply for those things around me – people, animals and the landscape – and I love to bring my representation of them alive for the viewer, often with a bit of humour, through use of colour and a variety of mediums. I have been painting since the age of 11 and exhibiting for more than 30 years.
