THE COLOURS OF VENICE
Venetian art has a distinct character compared with Italian Renaissance art elsewhere. Geography isolated the city economically and culturally and the soft, watery atmospherics affected the way the Venetians saw their world. Colours, changing light, and textures informed the Venetian painters, unlike those elsewhere who preferred outline clarity. In Venice the great masters like Bellini and Titian “drew with their brushes dipped in pigment”. This lecture covers Venetian art from the mosaics in San Marco by unknown craftsmen to the majestic High Renaissance altarpieces and the quiet, comedic narratives of Carpaccio and Pietro Longhi.
