Small Forest Wines is pleased to present this exhibition by Tomoko Oka.
Tomoko is a Japanese artist based around Sydney and the Central Coast. She creates Japanese calligraphy, sumi-e and abstract ink art.
Tomoko uses the bold and versatile medium of traditional Japanese calligraphy ink in creating abstract and sumi-e artworks. Since moving to Australia in 2016, the Australian flora and natural landscapes have started to influence her works. The traditional artforms of her home country are a link to her “former life” in Japan, and are now also a way of connecting with the people of her new home, Australia. In this collection of the three modes of her art (calligraphy, sumi-e, abstract), Tomoko hopes that people Japanese and Australian will find something they can connect with.
Tomoko’s art, including her calligraphy, has been used in high-profile marketing and advertising, bespoke murals and design features for restaurants, and private commission artworks. She has featured in several exhibitions, and also runs workshops, and gives dynamic large-brush calligraphy performances, for corporate and private events, as well as for festivals. She loves interacting with people, it is a great joy for her to share Japanese culture through her passion for calligraphy and the beauty of the Japanese aesthetic.
