Dungog By Design “In the Frame” is proud to present this collection of works by artist Susan Hodgins for the month of March 2026.
Susan Hodgins is a local ceramicist, sculptor, painter and teacher who has enjoyed the privilege of living on a hill not far from Dungog township. Over the years she has been able to weave the thread of her artmaking practice throughout various galleries in the Hunter, in both solo and group shows. In this exhibition, Susan plays with the possibilities of “The Picture Frame” as an aesthetic and expressive device.
“I have always considered it ‘a wondrous thing’ to contemplate the beauty inherent in discarded artifacts and the physical evidence of processes through time. Therefore, it is not surprising that all works in this exhibition feature re-used picture frames to varying degrees, but as an intrinsic element, rather than just a means of presentation.
Frames themselves can function as evocative ‘found objects’ in assemblages. They can suggest ‘a window into’, containment, grandeur, history, protection or a masterpiece within – or they can be fractured, breached or deconstructed to be interpreted in other ways.
So – it might be interesting to consider how frames or parts of frames (amongst other things) have been used in these works.”
