30 deadly and excited youth from across the Upper Hunter set their alarms early to take part in the inaugural Dare 2B Deadly Cultural Youth Day at the Minimbah Learning Centre last week.
Organised by a great big team of First Nations people and overseen by Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council and Arts Upper Hunter, participants took part in workshops ranging from dance, bush walking, traditional medicines (make your own salve!), photography (what a location!), weaving, art and language (Lingo Bingo!), all led by outstanding First Nations facilitators. The aim of the day was to promote connection and strengthen cultural ties and identity. Participants’ feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with ideas sprouting for next year’s event, if the funding can be found.
The On Country Day Camp is part of The Upper Hunter program, funded by the Australian Government through the Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support fund, and developed by Arts Upper Hunter in partnership with Wanaruah LALC, Hunter Local Land Services, Waagan Galga and other Aboriginal groups across the region.
