Counterpoise explores the subtle forces that define the character of the Hunter Valley landscape. Rather than focusing on dramatic scenery, artist Hanna Kay turns her attention to the often unnoticed quiet details that reveal a place’s essence.
Her works centre on two recurring motifs of grasses and rocks. These familiar elements are constantly shifting within natural cycles of growth, erosion, and renewal. For Kay, they highlight how both fragile forms and seemingly permanent structures are continuously transformed.
Though grasses and rocks hold symbolic significance across cultures, Kay’s engagement with them is primarily visual. She is drawn to the flow, rhythm, and repetition of grasses, finding a meditative quality in their depiction. Rocks, in contrast, evoke nature’s circular processes, moving between wholeness and fragmentation. Their presence, whether resting on dry earth or disturbing water, suggests a quiet tension between stillness and change. Within this interplay, Kay locates the balance that defines Counterpoise.
