Small Forest Wines’ first exhibition of 2026 features the work of Gail Southwell, a very talented artist from the Upper Hunter and a long-term resident of Scone. It closes on Sunday 29 March 2026.
Artist statement:
“I am an Upper Hunter artist and long-term resident of Scone.
My upbringing along the banks of the Hunter River has instilled an appreciation for the local environment. This experience has had a significant influence on my selection of art subjects, consistently leading me toward themes inspired by nature and the distinct landscapes found throughout Australia.
Over the past 20 years I have been fortunate enough to attend numerous workshops and be guided by a range of talented artists working with a variety of media. This has allowed me to learn and develop a love for many different styles and materials.
I absolutely love painting with (and collecting) soft pastels, but also have a love for acrylics and drawing with pen and ink. Currently I am exploring the use of oils and occasionally watercolour.
In recent years I have entered many prizes and exhibited in the local area, including Scone, Murrurundi, Muswellbrook, Nundle, Merriwa, and Gunnedah. I have been delighted to win several prizes and highly commended awards, including winning the Viola Bromley Award for works on paper in 2022 at Muswellbrook Regional Gallery. I am proud to say that my work hangs in many private collections.
Art is my relaxation and my joy! I firmly believe in giving back to the community that supports me, hence I am a long-term committee member of Scone Arts and Crafts and also a member of The Pastel Society of Australia. Being involved in these organisations has allowed me to form many friendships and feel a valued member of a wonderful art community.
In the future I would like to spend more time in my studio, experimenting with different materials and styles, and further developing my art practice.”
